Work in Progress

I like to have a project that is easy to pick up for five minutes here and there.  Currently I am making some button hearts.

I use aluminium florists wire which is sturdy but pliable to form a heart shape with a loop for hanging.  I then take thinner jewellery wire to attach the buttons starting at the top and winding around as I go.  I love them and will hopefully turn out a few over the next few weeks either to sell or as gifts.

Here’s a finished one

Kids Craft

On Friday evenings I help with a club for kids aged 9-11 at my church.  We do all sorts of fun and crazy activities but generally once or twice a term we have a more chilled out evening with optional activities and I do something crafty.

The aim is to have an activity that takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete, is suitable for boys and girls, doesn’t require too much help, is cheep and is cool/something that they’re interested in.  A couple of weeks ago we made these little guys…

...magnetic caterpillar pegs!!

They went down very well with the boys and girls.  They were fairly simple to make, a little fiddly but most managed them no problem.

Materials:

  • wooden pegs
  • mini pompoms in varying degrees of mini-ness
  • googly eyes
  • glue
  • magnet strip

Simply apply the glue to the peg, add the pompoms and eyes and then stick the magnet on the back (the magnet we had was self adhesive).

We used UHU glue which did work but took some time to stick and is a little delicate.  Something thicker like a glue gun would probably make them more robust.

I also put out a mix of stickers, ribbons, foam shapes and other bits and pieces and they made their own creations.  Unfortunately in the craziness I didn’t manage to get a picture of the kid’s handiwork.  But I have got my little sample bug stuck up on my fridge 🙂
